House Tour

The hiking trail from the Breitenebenalm to the Großwildalm takes us through the local forest with its ancient spruce trees and their imposing, wildly branched limbs. As we pass by blooming flower meadows and untouched fields, we discover the stunning alpine rhododendron (also known as the alpine rose, Latin: rhododendron ferrugineum) as well as mushrooms of all kinds. 

We delight in the numerous cows, sheep, goats, and whistling marmots that watch us in complete tranquility as we hike through the magnificent mountain world of Großarl. An eagle and a buzzard circling above us accompany us for a while in the air. A wonderful feast for the senses! 

We pass by the friendly alpine herders of the 40 active alpine pastures in the Großarl Valley. Filled with joy from these beautiful impressions, we reach the Großwildalm after two hours of walking—which seem to have flown by.

At the Großwildalm, Sandra is eagerly awaiting Lenz and her hotel guests. We immediately get started baking our homemade Kaiserschmarrn with stewed plums on our camp stove. The aroma is so tempting that other hikers pop into the hut out of curiosity to see what we’re up to. Accompanied by traditional accordion music, singing, and a mug of coffee, we enjoy our well-deserved, homemade lunch—mmmmmm...

After the delicious lunch, we continue hiking across flat alpine pastureland, past the high moor up to the Ellmaualm (1,794 meters). After a two-hour walk, we enjoy regional Brettljausen high up on the Ellmaualm with its enchanting panorama. Then we head down toward Grundlehen, from where we take the bus back to the Hotel Johanneshof. 

Our tip:

Hikers who don’t want to go that far can return from the Großwildalm via the Karseggalm-Unterwandalm and from there to the Breitenebenalm.
